Prevalence of and risk factors for failure of fetal magnetic resonance imaging due to maternal claustrophobia or malaise

The present retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for failure of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to maternal claustrophobia or malaise. Data from 3413 pregnant women who underwent fetal MRI at a single center between January 2012 and December 2019 was analyzed. The rate of failure was found to be 2.1% and was lower in patients who underwent MRI for a clinical indication compared to those who underwent MRI for research purposes only (0.6% vs 2.4%). Independent risk factors for claustrophobia/malaise during the procedure were identified as having MRI performed for research purposes only, higher maternal age, later gestational age at the time of fetal MRI, and shorter fetal MRI duration. Body mass index, ethnic origin, multiple pregnancies, being parous, and size of the magnetic bore were not associated with MRI failure due to claustrophobia/malaise. The conclusion was that the rate of fetal MRI failure due to maternal claustrophobia or malaise was low and should not be a major concern in the pregnant population.
