This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the prevalence of Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) among individuals with and without gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It finds that BE prevalence is significantly higher in GERD patients compared to those without GERD, particularly for long-segment BE. However, a notable proportion of BE and EAC cases occur in individuals without GERD symptoms, suggesting the need for broader screening criteria beyond traditional GERD symptomatology in early detection guidelines.
