Prevalence of sleep apnea in patients with type 1 diabetes and its association with comorbidities and diabetic complications: a French nationwide prospective study

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and impacts of sleep apnea in individuals with type 1 diabetes. The French multicenter prospective cohort study found that 12.4% and 3.4% of the 769 participants had mild-moderate or severe sleep apnea, respectively. Age, sex, body mass index, and hypertension were significantly associated with sleep apnea. Severe sleep apnea was significantly associated with macrovascular complications, while mild-moderate sleep apnea was significantly associated with the presence of diabetic retinopathy. The study highlights the need for sleep apnea screening and management in individuals with type 1 diabetes.
