Preventing Complications in Head and Neck Cancer Patients: How Much Time is Needed for Oral Care?

The webinar discusses a study on the impact of prophylactic oral care (POC) on head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT). The study followed a standardized protocol with definite timelines and analyzed data on oral treatment time (OTT), interruption in RT due to oral issues, future extractions, and incidence of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) up to 18 months after treatment. The results showed that performing POC helped maintain satisfactory oral health, facilitated timely removal of infections, and ensured RT could be performed as scheduled, with no interruption in the schedule due to oral issues. The study highlights the importance of POC in preparing patients for RT.
