The qualitative study explored health promotion systems in primary schools in Ireland following the COVID-19 pandemic, from the perspectives of teachers and principals. Thirty participants, mostly female, were recruited for online focus groups and analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. Three key themes emerged: rebuilding the foundation, choosing within our limits, and drawing the line. Findings indicated that health promotion systems were severely impacted during the pandemic, and recovery would take time. Schools were identified as well-positioned to play a central role in disease prevention, but investment is required to create resilient health promotion frameworks. This is crucial as the child health challenges exacerbated by the pandemic are addressed in the years to come.
