Probiotics Shorten Phototherapy in Preterm Neonates

A study investigated the efficacy of phototherapy alone versus phototherapy with oral probiotics (Saccharomyces boulardii) for treating indirect hyperbilirubinemia in preterm neonates. Conducted in a neonatal unit, 76 preterm neonates received either standard phototherapy or phototherapy with probiotics. The group receiving probiotics showed significantly shorter durations of phototherapy (24.61 vs. 36.55 hours) and hospitalization (33.13 vs. 47.36 hours). Oral probiotics also reduce the risk of nosocomial infections. The study highlights the potential benefits of probiotics in managing neonatal jaundice and emphasizes the need for further research on clinical outcomes and different probiotic strains.
