Prognostic value of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin in non-cardiac surgical patients in intensive care units

This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) in type II acute myocardial injury among non-cardiac surgical patients requiring post-operative ICU admission. Analyzing 420 patients, higher hs-cTn levels were associated with increased hospital mortality, ICU length of stay (LOS), and hospital LOS in univariable analysis. However, multivariable analysis did not show an independent association between hs-cTn and hospital mortality. Notably, in elective surgical patients, hs-cTn was independently associated with an increased risk of hospital mortality. Larger multicenter studies are recommended to confirm this association and aid in risk stratification for elective surgical patients in the ICU.
