Prognostic value of programmed death ligand‐1 and programmed death‐1 expression in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma

This study investigated the significance of programmed death ligand‐1 (PD‐L1) and programmed death‐1 (PD‐1) expression in 283 UTUC patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate PD‐L1 and PD‐1 expression. Patients expressing PD‐L1 or PD‐1 showed more advanced tumor stages and higher grades. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that PD‐L1 and PD‐1 expression were linked to decreased recurrence‐free, cancer‐specific, and overall survival. Patients with both PD‐L1 and PD‐1 expression had the worst outcomes. The study concludes that PD‐L1 and PD‐1 expression can predict adverse outcomes for UTUC patients treated with radical nephroureterectomy.
