Pseudo-Epiglottis and Swallowing Function: Exploring the Impact of Vertical Pharyngeal Closure in Laryngectomy Surgery

This study investigated the swallowing outcomes of patients with pseudo-epiglottis, which is a prolapsed mucosa that separates the neopharynx from a pseudo-diverticulum. 75% of the patients with pseudo-epiglottis had dysphagia. After surgical division, the patients showed significant improvement in their swallowing outcomes as measured by the M. D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) scores, including a high minimally clinically important difference (MCID) for all MDADI subscales. The study concludes that pseudo-epiglottis formation is associated with worse swallowing outcomes, but surgical division can lead to significant improvement.
