This review discusses the significant advancements made in understanding the relationship between the immune system and neural/psychological development and function. The aim is to inform psychologists about this field of research and its relevance to clinical psychology. The article begins by explaining the basics of immune-to-brain signaling and the neuroimmune network, with a specific focus on inflammation. It then explores the impact of immune activation on various psychological aspects, including positive and negative emotions, social processes, cognition, and arousal (such as fatigue and sleep). Additionally, the article examines the connections between immune activity and psychological disorders such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia. The role of psychosocial stress and early life adversity as modulators of neuroimmune activity is also discussed. Finally, the review highlights psychosocial and mind-body interventions that can influence the immune system and potentially enhance neuroimmune resilience.
