Increased collaboration between governments and private industry entities has led to a surge in human spaceflight activities. Missions to destinations like low Earth orbit, the Moon (Artemis program, Gateway station), and Mars are being planned successfully. Additional commercial space stations are also in the works to support scientific research and commercial space travel. However, space travel poses significant challenges to human physiology, including altered lung function, increased gravitational forces, and microgravity. While emergency scenarios are beyond the scope of this review, pulmonary specialists and aerospace medicine experts must collaborate closely to ensure the safety and success of individuals with pre-existing medical conditions participating in commercial spaceflight.
