Punica Granatum Extract Outperforms CHX Against Oral Biofilms

The study examined the effect of Punica granatum extract (PGE) on oral multispecies biofilms. Lyophilized pomegranate peel extracts were tested at various concentrations (10%, 20%, 30%) on biofilms grown on hydroxyapatite discs. Results showed that PGE effectively killed bacteria in 1- to 3-week-old biofilms, with 30% PGE demonstrating superior antibiofilm activity (37%–55.3% bacteria killed) compared to 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), which had an effectiveness range of 25.2%–48.7%. PGE alone or combined with CHX showed better results than CHX alone, and older biofilms were more resistant to treatment. These findings suggest that PGE could be a potent alternative or adjunct to conventional antimicrobial agents in oral biofilm management.
