QRS Fragmentation Disproves as Prognostic Marker in Myocardial Infarction Survivors, Unveils Links to Infarction Size

A recent prospective cohort study involving 609 myocardial infarction survivors aimed to assess the prognostic significance of fragmented QRS complexes. Results revealed a 46.8% prevalence of QRS fragmentations, with no elevated risk of all-cause death (HR 0.84, p=0.582) compared to those without. Although cardiac and non-cardiac death risks were not significantly different, patients with QRS fragmentations exhibited higher serum creatine kinase levels (1438U/l vs. 1160U/l, p=0.039) and lower left ventricular ejection fractions (52% vs. 54%, p=0.011). The study disproved the hypothesis that QRS fragmentation serves as a prognostic parameter but highlighted associations with larger myocardial infarctions.
