
In people with type 1 diabetes (T1D), exercise can lead to risky blood glucose fluctuations due to increased glucose utilization. The impact of resistance exercise (RE) on glucose dynamics in T1D individuals was studied. Participants underwent moderate or high-intensity RE sessions with varying insulin infusion rates. Blood glucose remained stable on average during exercise. Endogenous glucose production (EGP) increased during RE and decreased with higher insulin infusion rates. Glucose disposal (Rd) also rose during RE, proportional to insulin infusion rate. Noninsulin-mediated glucose utilization increased during exercise, returning to baseline post-exercise. Insulin-mediated glucose utilization remained constant. These findings suggest lower hypoglycemia risk with RE compared to aerobic exercise in T1D.
