Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Resilience Factors in African American Youth Mental Health

This review focuses on the impact of racism on the mental health of African American children, adolescents, and emerging adults. It examines various resilience factors that can mitigate the negative effects of racism, including ethnic and racial identity, ethnic-racial socialization, religiosity and spirituality, and family and parenting. The review presents representative studies and explores the mechanisms behind these factors. It also acknowledges the limitations of previous research and highlights recent advancements, such as considering gender, cultural context, and structural racism. The insights gained from these studies can inform the development of prevention and intervention efforts, as well as policies to promote mental health equity for African American youth.
