Real‐world use of sodium–glucose co‐transporter 2 inhibitors in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction: Data from the Swedish Heart Failure Registry

The study investigated the implementation of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) over time and the patient characteristics associated with their use in a large population with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The overall use of SGLT2i increased from 20.5% to 59.0% over time. Factors associated with SGLT2i use included male sex, recent HF hospitalization, specialized HF follow-up, lower ejection fraction, type 2 diabetes, higher education level, and use of other HF/cardiovascular interventions. Older age, higher blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, and anemia were associated with lower SGLT2i use. The discontinuation rates at 6 and 12 months were 13.1% and 20.0%, respectively. The study emphasizes the need for continued efforts to ensure equitable implementation and avoid discontinuations across different patient subgroups.
