A recent retrospective study examined the feasibility of replacing preoperative nuclear medicine renal scintigraphy (NMRS) with a simpler point-of-care method, known as the Real-time Estimation of Nephron Activity with a Linear Measurement System (RENAL-MS), for predicting post-nephrectomy renal function. The study compared the two methods using data from 57 patients who underwent total nephrectomy. The results showed that RENAL-MS performed just as well as NMRS in predicting postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) and the development of new-onset CKDIII ≥90 days after surgery. This study suggests that RENAL-MS could be a viable alternative to NMRS in clinical practice.
