Redox regulation in diabetic kidney disease

Redox regulation in diabetic kidney disease

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a severe complication of diabetes, lacking a cure. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of DKD, but the details of redox regulation remain unclear. The complexity of redox biology and the diverse cell types in the kidney contribute to this ambiguity. Terms like "oxidative stress" and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are often used broadly, but different ROS have varying reactivity and biological effects. This review provides a biochemical background on specific types of ROS in the kidney and advancements in redox biology to enhance our understanding of DKD development and risk.
