A study evaluated the real-world effectiveness of the reinforced treat-and-extend (RTE) protocol in treating exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with aflibercept or ranibizumab injections. Over 24 months, 68 patients saw significant improvements in best-corrected visual acuity and central retinal thickness, with reduced recurrence rates. Patients received an average of 14.9 injections and 8.6 consultations. While outcomes between strict and modified RTE groups initially showed no significant difference, the modified group experienced shorter intervals of disease recurrence. However, the strict RTE group received fewer injections and had longer injection intervals. The RTE protocol demonstrated potential for improving AMD management efficiency and patient compliance by reducing hospital visits and overall burden.
