Relationship Between Azithromycin and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Unvaccinated Patients With COVID-19 and Preexisting Cardiovascular Disease

The study finds an increased risk of heart failure and mortality associated with azithromycin use in COVID-19 patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease. Among the total of 2934 patients, 36.4% had preexisting cardiovascular disease. Azithromycin therapy was consistently linked to a higher risk of acute heart failure in patients with prior cardiovascular disease. However, azithromycin use was not significantly associated with death compared to standard care. These findings emphasize the need for caution in prescribing azithromycin to COVID-19 patients with preexisting cardiovascular conditions.
