Skin injuries and diseases often lead to fibrosis, causing hair follicle (HF) growth arrest and loss, impacting patients physically and psychologically. The study reveals elevated dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) levels in areas with HF growth arrest and loss. Topical inhibition of DPP4 with sitagliptin in murine models accelerates HF activation/regeneration and reduces fibrosis markers in wounds. This FDA/European Medicines Agency-approved diabetes medication, when repurposed topically, holds promise for reversing alopecia and promoting HF regeneration after injury.
