Retinal microvascular markers in type 2 diabetes subphenotypes and latent autoimmune diabetes of adults

The study aimed to compare the subclinical retinal microvascular structure and diabetic retinopathy (DR) among newly diagnosed patients with different subphenotypes of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) or latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). The study included 340 patients (675 eyes) classified into subgroups based on beta cell function and insulin sensitivity. The results showed no significant difference in retinal venular or arteriolar width or vessel density, tortuosity, or fractal dimension between the subtypes of T2DM. However, there was a tendency for patients with hyperinsulinaemic T2DM to be more likely to have DR compared to those with classical T2DM. Although, these findings suggest no difference in retinal microvascular structure among subtypes of newly diagnosed T2DM, DR may be more prevalent in patients with hyperinsulinaemic T2DM.
