Rhinologist Use of Antibiotics With Nasal Packing for Epistaxis

A survey was conducted among otolaryngologists to examine their antibiotic prescribing practices for patients with epistaxis who required nasal packing. The study found limited evidence supporting prophylactic antibiotic usage in this context. Results showed that antibiotic prescription rates varied depending on the type of packing used, with higher rates for nondissolvable packing. About 69.7% of respondents discontinued antibiotics immediately after packing removal. The risk of toxic shock syndrome was commonly cited as a rationale for prescribing antibiotics. Regional differences were observed in antibiotic utilization. Years in practice were associated with certain prescribing patterns. The study concludes that antibiotic use in epistaxis patients with nondissolvable packing is prevalent and influenced by geographical location and experience level.
