Risk and Consequences: Understanding Comorbidities in Type 1 Diabetes Patients with Sleep Apnoea

The study aimed to investigate sleep apnea prevalence, factors influencing severity, and associations between sleep apnea severity and micro-/macrovascular complications in a large population of patients with type 1 diabetes. The study found that sleep apnea is a significant comorbidity in patients with type 1 diabetes and is associated with diabetic complications. Therefore, the study highlights the need for sleep apnea screening and management in these individuals. Factors significantly associated with sleep apnea included age, sex, body mass index, and hypertension. Severe sleep apnea was significantly associated with macrovascular complications, while mild-to-moderate sleep apnea was significantly associated with the presence of diabetic retinopathy.
