Risk Factors and Angiographic Profile in Young Individuals with Acute ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in adults, with myocardial infarction (MI) as its lethal manifestation. MI is increasingly affecting young individuals. A retrospective study at a tertiary care centre examined the prevalence of conventional risk factors in young MI patients. Surprisingly, 25% had no risk factors, but among others, obesity (48%), diabetes mellitus (32%), hypertension (29.5%), smoking (15.5%), alcoholism (11%), and family history of premature CAD (3%) were common. Most patients had single-vessel disease (69.5%), with the Left Anterior Descending artery (77%) being the most affected. Double-vessel and triple-vessel disease were seen in 24% and 6.5% of cases, respectively.
