UROLOGY

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a commonly used treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia, but bladder neck contracture (BNC) is a long-term complication. This study aimed to identify risk factors for BNC after TURP. A retrospective analysis of 1368 patients who underwent TURP between 2013 and 2018 found that 6.4% developed BNC requiring further surgical therapy. Smaller preoperative prostate volume, positive preoperative urine culture, and urethral stricture requiring direct visual internal urethrotomy after TURP were identified as independent predictors for BNC development. Patients with smaller prostates should be informed about this complication. Preoperative antibiotic treatment showed a protective effect.

Average annual prevalence was 3.32 per 100,000 children, highest among infants and with a secondary rise during adolescence. Reported cases increased annually (IRR 1.022), while declining markedly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
