Risk Factors for Complications in Tunneled Peritoneal Catheters for Ascites

This retrospective cohort study assessed risk factors for complications in tunneled peritoneal catheters used for symptomatic ascites in palliative patients. Among 49 patients, the procedure was successful in all cases with low severe complications. Higher risks were found in patients with benign diseases, those needing drainage replacement, and those treated by less experienced physicians. The study supports tunneled peritoneal catheters as an effective and safe treatment for ascites in end-stage palliative care, with careful patient selection.
