A recent study reveals that individuals with atopic dermatitis (AD) face an elevated risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). The research, conducted on a vast cohort of both children and adults, highlights the impact of AD severity on IBD risk. Children with AD showed a 44% increased risk of IBD, especially CD, while adults had a 34% higher risk of IBD. The risk grew with worsening AD. The severity of AD was found to be correlated with higher IBD risk, emphasizing the need for awareness among clinicians when treating AD patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.
