Risk stratification of extravasation during semi-automatic intraosseous device use in a pediatric emergency setting

The study investigated risk factors for extravasation in pediatric patients using the semi-automatic intraosseous device EZ-IO®. Analyzing 72 cases at a pediatric emergency department, 14 patients experienced extravasation, with 54.2% diagnosed with cardiac arrest and 69.4% having a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 8 or less. High GCS scores were significantly associated with extravasation, with odds ratios of 12.25 (GCS <13) and 4.78 (GCS <8). The findings suggested a correlation between high GCS scores and increased extravasation risk during EZ-IO use in pediatric patients.
