Safety, tolerability, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of the soluble guanylyl cyclase activator BI 685509 in patients with diabetic kidney disease: A randomized trial

The study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the NO-independent sGC activator BI 685509 in patients with diabetic kidney disease and albuminuria. The Phase Ib trial included patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and varying degrees of kidney function. Patients were randomly assigned to receive BI 685509 or a placebo for 28 days. The results showed that BI 685509 was generally well tolerated, with some drug-related adverse events reported. The reduction in urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), a marker of albuminuria, was not statistically significant in the treatment groups compared to placebo. However, there were promising decreases in UACR in some patients, suggesting the need for further investigation.
