Salivary and Serum Levels of Neutrophil Proteases in Periodontitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

The study investigated the levels of active-matrix metalloproteinase (aMMP)-8, tissue inhibitor MMP (TIMP)-1, aMMP-8/TIMP-1 ratio, total MMP (tMMP)-9, tMMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and human neutrophil elastase (HNE) in serum and saliva of patients with periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The results showed that salivary levels of aMMP-8, aMMP-8/TIMP-1 ratio, tMMP-9, tMMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio, MPO, and HNE were significantly higher in periodontitis patients compared to controls. Salivary TIMP-1 and neutrophil protease levels were increased in RA patients compared to systemically healthy groups. The study suggests that periodontitis and RA are associated with changes in the levels of these proteins in saliva and serum.
