This study discovered that COVID-19 infection induces long-lasting alterations in the immune system. Using targeted single-cell multiomics, this study examined three independent cohorts of COVID-19 patients, uncovering a persistent pro-inflammatory gene expression profile in T, B, and NK cells, as well as monocytes. The altered transcriptional profile, which resembles an anti-inflammatory signature induced by low-dose IL-2 treatment in type 1 diabetes patients, persists for at least 2 months post-infection. These findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infection may leave individuals susceptible to long-term health issues such as autoimmune diseases, viral reactivation, and disturbances in the immune system-microbiome balance.
