Scleral Buckle, Vitrectomy, or Combined Surgery for Inferior Break Retinal Detachment

This study compared outcomes of scleral buckle (SB), pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), and combined PPV-SB in treating rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs) with inferior retinal breaks (IRBs). The study, involving 15 eligible publications with 1017 eyes, found no significant difference in retinal reattachment probabilities between PPV and PPV-SB at 3 and 12 months postoperatively after 1 or > 1 surgery. Pars plana vitrectomy-SB showed less improvement in vision at 3 months, but this difference disappeared at 12 months. The evidence suggests no added benefit of SB to PPV for RRDs with IRBs.
