Seeing is Believing: How Lung Ultrasound and AI-Enhanced CT Are Changing the COVID-19 Diagnostic Landscape

This study, published in BMC Infectious Diseases, aimed to evaluate the value of lung ultrasound (LUS) in quantifying the degree of lung involvement and discrimination of lesion types in COVID-19 pneumonia compared to high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) analyzed by artificial intelligence (AI). The study included 65 adult COVID-19 patients who had initial HRCT and LUS performed with an interval of less than 72 hours. The study found strong correlations between LUS and CT scores and between LUS scores and percentage inflammation volume. The study concluded that LUS could be an accurate method to evaluate the extent of COVID-19 pneumonia and estimate its clinical severity. However, further studies are required to assess the structure of inflammation with LUS during the course of the disease.
