The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), continued throughout 2021. Highly effective vaccines became widely available in 2021, and essential, translational, and clinical knowledge about COVID-19 expanded at a rapid pace. This bibliography cites and summarizes publications from American Thoracic Society journals and others centered on the year 2021 that inform the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, vaccines, and treatment advances in COVID-19 while considering broader effects on society, healthcare delivery, and medical education.
