This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) every 2 weeks versus every week in patients with lifestyle-controlled gestational diabetes (GDMA1). A total of 104 participants were randomly assigned to either the 2-weekly or weekly SMBG group. The primary outcome was the change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level from enrollment to 36 weeks of pregnancy. The results showed that the difference in HbA1c change between the two groups was within the non-inferiority margin of 0.2%. Both groups exhibited a significant increase in HbA1c levels. Participants in the 2-weekly SMBG group were less likely to require anti-glycemic treatment. No significant differences were found in secondary outcomes such as maternal weight gain, preterm delivery, cesarean delivery, birthweight, and neonatal admission. The study concludes that 2-weekly SMBG is non-inferior to weekly SMBG for monitoring women with GDMA1.
