Semaglutide and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Obesity without Diabetes

A groundbreaking multicenter trial investigated the cardiovascular impact of weekly subcutaneous semaglutide (2.4 mg) versus a placebo in patients aged 45 or older with preexisting cardiovascular disease and a body-mass index ≥27 but without diabetes. The semaglutide group (n=8803) exhibited a 6.5% occurrence of primary cardiovascular events compared to 8.0% in the placebo group (n=8801), with a significant hazard ratio of 0.80 (P<0.001). The study, spanning 34.2±13.7 months, concludes that semaglutide reduces cardiovascular risks, demonstrating superiority over placebo.
