A study investigated the excessive hair growth observed in hairy-pigmented nevi, specifically focusing on the role of senescent melanocytes. The study found that clusters of senescent melanocytes in these nevi produced signals that induced hyperactive hair growth in adjacent epithelial hair stem cells. The secretion of certain factors, particularly osteopontin, by senescent melanocytes played a crucial role in promoting hair growth. Understanding the interaction between stem cells and senescent melanocytes in nevi could have implications for regenerative disorders and potential therapeutic approaches.
