The CASA-MS study compared severely disabled (SD/SN) multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with less disabled (DDM-CD) ones, matched by age, sex, and disease duration. Conducted at a skilled nursing facility and a tertiary MS centre, the study assessed clinical, molecular, and neuroimaging data. It found that SD/SN patients had significantly lower cortical and thalamic volumes, distinguishing them from DDM-CD patients. The study concluded that severe progressive MS is characterized by greater gray matter atrophy.
