Sex Differences in Coronary Atherosclerotic Phenotype and Healing Pattern on Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging

The study analyzed pre-intervention optical coherence tomography images of 533 patients. Layered plaque, a predictor of rapid plaque progression, showed varying features between men and women. In men, layered plaque exhibited higher vulnerability, vascular inflammation, and evidence of previous plaque rupture compared to nonlayered plaques. The findings suggest that the predominant mechanism of layered plaque in men involves vascular inflammation, while a less inflammatory process may play a key role in women.
