Shaping the Future of Children's Mental Health: A Pediatric Clinician's Perspective

The study surveyed pediatric primary care clinicians working in Federally Qualified Health Centers in the US to identify their methods for assessing social-emotional well-being in young children and their perceived barriers to providing behavioral healthcare. The study found that PCCs perceived social-emotional well-being as important for overall health but lacked confidence in providing care for common social-emotional well-being concerns. They also expressed low satisfaction with currently available screening measures, and few reported using standardized parent-reported measures for identifying concerns. The study recommends the development of assessment methods and decision tools to improve clinician confidence and calls for policymakers and payers to facilitate funding mechanisms to support pediatric PCCs in identifying early concerns and providing referral guidance to evidence-based interventions.
