
The study evaluates the link between chronic inflammation and the increased risk of cardiovascular disease in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Inflammation is known to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease in the general population, and efforts are made to control inflammation to lower the risk of cardiovascular events. Studying targeted therapies in RA provides insights into the effects of inhibiting specific pathways on cardiovascular risk. The study focuses on pro-inflammatory pathways, such as IL-1, IL-6, TNF, and the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, and their roles in both RA pathogenesis in the joints and the development of cardiovascular disease. The data suggest that inhibiting IL-1 and IL-6 can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, with emerging evidence supporting IL-6 inhibition in both RA patients and the general population for reducing cardiovascular risk.
