This study compares the incidence of subsequent prostate cancer diagnosis and death in men who had an initial non-malignant TRUS biopsy to an age- and calendar-year-matched population over 20 years. The analysis includes a cohort of 37,231 men in Denmark who had an initial non-malignant TRUS biopsy between 1995-2016. The study found that men with non-malignant TRUS biopsy have a higher incidence of prostate cancer but a lower risk of prostate cancer death than the population average. The study concludes that attempts to increase the sensitivity of the initial biopsy are unjustified, and current follow-up after a non-malignant biopsy is likely overaggressive, particularly in men over 60.
