Simvastatin and Rifaximin Ineffective in Decompensated Cirrhosis

A phase 3 trial assessed the combination of simvastatin and rifaximin in decompensated cirrhosis. No significant differences were found in the incidence of acute-on-chronic liver failure, transplant or death, or complications between the treatment and placebo groups. Adverse events were similar, with 2.6% of patients on treatment developing rhabdomyolysis. The addition of simvastatin and rifaximin to standard therapy did not improve outcomes in decompensated cirrhosis.
