Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. Recent research highlights the involvement of immune cells in regulating renal inflammation, a key factor in DKD progression. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology has emerged as a powerful tool in exploring cellular heterogeneity and gene expression profiles, providing deeper insights into the immune response within the kidney. This technique enables the detailed study of signaling pathways, intercellular communication, and immune cell interactions in kidney biopsy and urine samples. Despite challenges posed by the kidney's complex and heterogeneous structure, scRNA-seq has facilitated discoveries in the role of immune cells, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells, in DKD pathogenesis.
