
A study examined the link between sleep and subcortical brain structures in 98 children with overweight/obesity. Sleep behaviors were assessed using wrist-worn accelerometers, while subcortical brain structure was measured via MRI. Results showed that only total time in bed correlated significantly with changes in the pallidum and putamen structure. Children spending more time in bed exhibited expansions in these brain regions. This suggests a relationship between prolonged time in bed and alterations in subcortical brain structures in children with overweight/obesity.
