Smoking and Alcohol Use in Chronic Respiratory Disease Patients

The prospective study examined smoking and alcohol use in 219 patients hospitalized for chronic respiratory disease (CRD). While cigarette consumption decreased over one year, overall smoking prevalence remained stable. Alcohol use prevalence stayed around 50% in both first and consecutive admissions. Findings suggest that hospitalization alone does not promote cessation, highlighting the need for integrated motivational interventions.
