Smoking Worsens Outcomes in MASLD and MetALD Patients

The UK Biobank study assessed smoking's impact on MASLD and MetALD outcomes. Never and previous smokers had significantly lower all-cause and liver-related mortality compared to current smokers (e.g., HR 0.43 in MASLD). Smoking was linked to higher rates of liver cirrhosis and cardiovascular disease. In MASLD, never smokers also had reduced risks of hepatic decompensation and HCC. Smoking cessation is vital in liver disease management.
