Explore how social isolation and loneliness impact diabetic microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes patients. This prospective cohort study tracked 24,297 UK Biobank participants over 12.6 years, finding that higher social isolation increased the risk of DMC, especially diabetic kidney disease and neuropathy. Loneliness also raised DMC risk. These social factors were as significant as traditional risk factors like smoking and hypertension. This highlights the need to consider social factors in managing T2DM.
