The study aimed to identify the factors influencing perioperative healthcare utilization in pediatric patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Sociodemographic data and clinical information were collected from 427 patients who underwent tympanoplasty with/without mastoidectomy between 2010 and 2020. The study found that insurance status was the primary factor associated with healthcare utilization, and rural children were more likely to have Medicaid insurance. In addition, Medicaid patients had higher odds of pre-and post-operative no-shows, lower odds of having a post-operative audiogram, and higher odds of being from a rural community. Furthermore, Medicaid patients undergoing mastoidectomy had lower odds of revision procedures for ossicular reconstruction, and Appalachian rural mastoidectomy patients had higher odds of cholesteatoma. The study concludes that pediatric patients with CSOM who have Medicaid insurance, especially those in rural regions, may face barriers to accessing perioperative hearing healthcare.
